中原兼遠の娘であり、木曾四天王といわれた樋口兼光と今井兼平の妹であり───義仲とは乳兄妹の仲であった。

The dates of her birth and death are unknown. She is believed to be from the latter years of the Heian period or early Kamakura period.
She was a concubine of the great commander Kiso-no-Yoshinaka (Minamoto-no-Yoshinaka), who gained the position of "Seii-Taishogun," but was defeated by Minamoto-no-Yoritomo. A heroic woman who demonstrated unyielding loyalty to Yoshinaka, and could boast many military achievements.
She was versed in combat and was lauded as being a match for a thousand warriors.
She is the daughter of Nakahara Kanetou, and the younger sister of Higuchi Kanemitsu and Imai Kanehira, who were a part of the Kiso Elite Four...and she was a milk sister to Yoshinaka.
Her years of birth and death are unknown. An individual from the late Heian・early Kamakura periods.
The beloved concubine of Kiso no Yoshinaka (Minamoto no Yoshinaka), the famous general who earned the title of Sei-i Taishōgun and was defeated by Minamoto no Yoritomo.
Constantly by Yoshinaka's side, a brave woman who frequently accomplished military achievements.
Excelling in military prowess, she was famed as a mighty warrior.

覚一本『平家物語』巻九「木曾最期」によれば
「いろしろく髪ながく、容顔まことにすぐれたり。ありがたきつよ弓、せい兵、馬のうへ、かちだち、うち物もツては鬼にも神にもあはふどいふ一人当千の兵也」
とある。
すなわち、色白、長髪、容姿に優れた強弓にして一騎当千の美女こそが巴御前である。

According to "The Death of Kiso" in volume nine of the "Tale of the Heike," Kakuichi-bon version, she is described as follows:
"[She] had long black hair and a fair complexion, and her face was very lovely; moreover she was a fearless rider whom neither the fiercest horse nor the roughest ground could dismay and so dexterously did she handle sword and bow that she was a match for a thousand warriors and fit to meet either god or devil."
A fair-skinned, long haired, and beautiful archer as strong as a thousand warriors...that is indeed Tomoe Gozen.
In "Kiso's Last Moments", the 9th chapter of "The Tale of the Heike" written by Kakuichi, she was portrayed as
"of lovely long hair, of truly outstanding features. Exceptionally strong with a bow, a soldier that matched a thousand, always ready to face even a demon or a god, be it mounted or on foot".
In other words, fair-skinned, of long hair, a great archer with outstanding features. A beautiful, mighty warrior - that is Tomoe Gozen. |

This skill is not for commanding troops. Rather, it grants one the ability to fight bravely in such a frenetic conflict. Many against many, one against many...those are the battles to which Tomoe is accustomed.

A type of self-hypnosis Tomoe used unconsciously during her lifetime.
Upon her manifestation as a Servant, this has been defined as a skill that temporarily increases her oni strength.

愛する木曾義仲を供養した義仲寺の本尊たる聖観音菩薩───その真言を唱えることで「自分の中の義仲への愛」を確かめた後、敵を掴んで投げ飛ばし、そして灼熱の矢を打ち込み、義仲への想いを象徴する太陽に似せた魔力によってダメージを与える。

Shōkannon Bosatsu Mantra.
Anti-personnel Noble Phantasm. Tomoe's grief at not dying alongside Yoshinaka, combined with her own inner fire and her monstrous oni strength, manifest in the form of a Noble Phantasm.
Shōkannon Bosatsu is the Buddha enshrined at Gichuji Temple, where her beloved Kiso Yoshinaka is entombed. By chanting the mantra, she is able to verify her love for Yoshinaka. She then takes hold of her enemy and hurls them into the air before piercing their body with one of her flaming arrows. This deals damage using magical energy that mimics the sun, representing her feelings towards Yoshinaka.

The Aryavalokitesvara Bodhisattva that acts as the honzon of the Gichuji, the temple that held the memorial services for her beloved Kiso no Yoshinaka--- after confirming "the love towards Yoshinaka within herself" by chanting its mantra, she grabs and hurls the enemy, and fires an incandescent arrow into him, causing damage with a magical energy that resembles the sun that symbolizes her feelings for Yoshinaka.

She is normally a delicate maiden who loves nature and detests altercations between humans.
Tomoe Gozen's view of life and death is clear-cut: she believes she is a transient guest in the form of a Servant, and knows with certainty that she is destined to vanish from the face of the earth.
