新選組の八番隊隊長、藤堂平助。
新選組の結成当初からの中心メンバーの一人であり、最年少で幹部の座に就いた俊才。池田屋事件など数々の戦いで活躍する。
新選組の中核を担ったが、のちに入隊した伊東甲子太郎らと共に新選組を脱退し、彼らと御陵衛士を結成。だが新選組との対立の末、油小路の変にて命を落とす。

Captain of the Eighth Unit of the security organization that operated mainly in the Kyōto of the Bakumatsu,
the Shinsengumi, Tōdō Heisuke.
One of the main members since the beginnings of the Shinsengumi’s formation, and a prodigy that took the seat of an executive being the youngest. He did great efforts in several battles such as the Ikedaya Incident.
He was a core part of the Shinsengumi, but he later seceded from the Shinsengumi along with Itō Kashitarō and others who enlisted with him, and formed the Goryō Eji with them. But after a confrontation with the Shinsengumi, he lost his life in the Abura-no-kōji Incident.

彼の出自には諸説があり、一説にはとある藩主のご落胤ともいわれるが真偽は不明。
江戸の玄武館にて北辰一刀流を学んでいたが、天然理心流の道場である試衛館にて近藤勇ら、のちの新選組メンバーたちと出会う。その後、浪士組に彼らと共に参加。新選組結成時には最年少でありながら、剣術や見識を買われ、八番隊隊長となる。
池田屋事件においては、近藤、沖田、永倉と共に討ち入り、刀がぼろぼろになるまで奮戦するも、額に一刀を受け重傷を負う。
そののち、江戸にいたころに親交のあった伊東甲子太郎を近藤に引き合わせ、新選組に入隊させる。しかし、伊東は、近藤、土方らと対立。共に新選組をはなれ、御陵衛士を結成する事となる。
ここに至り、新選組との対立は決定的となり、伊東は殺害され、遺体を奪還せんと御陵衛士と共に、油小路にて死闘を繰り広げ、戦死した。享年24。死体は数々の傷を負っていたという。

There are many theories about his origins, with one saying he’s a certain feudal lord’s illegitimate child but the truth or falsehood of it is unknown. He learned Hokushin Ittō-ryū at the Genbukan in Edo, but met Kondō Isami and the to-be members of the Shinsengumi at the dōjō of Tennen Rishin-ryū, the Shieikan. Later, he joined the Rōshingumi with them. While he was the youngest by the time of the Shinsengumi’s formation, his swordsmanship and opinions were valued, and he became the Eighth Unit Captain. In the Ikedaya Incident, he stormed the place along with Kondō, Okita, and Nagakura, fought hard until his katana was worn out, but also received a slash on the head that injured him seriously. After that, he introduced his friend from when he was in Edo, Itō Kashitarō, to Kondō, and let him enlist the Shinsengumi. However, Itō confronted Kondō, Hijikata and others. They left the Shinsengumi together, and founded the Goryō Eji. At this point, the confrontation with the Shinsengumi became decisive, Itō was murdered, he tried to recover the body with the Goryō Eji, a death battle unfolded in Aburakōji, and he died in combat. He died at 24. It is said that his corpse had received several wounds. |

新選組からも、御陵衛士からも、自分が必要とされなかったと思い込んでおり、誰も自分を見ていないと悲嘆にくれていた。
そのためか精神状態が不安定で、マガツヒノカミの力に心身を蝕まれ続けている。

そんな僕だけど、新選組に入り、仲間たちと過ごした日々は輝いていた。僕にもようやく居場所が見つかったようで、嬉しかった。少しでもみんなのためにと、我先にと戦いに飛び込み、正しい事のためにとこの剣を振るった。
───でも、全部偽物だった。
結局、僕は誰にも必要とされなかった。新選組のみんなにも、御陵衛士のみんなにも……。
