Rider, Kyokutei Bakin! Happy to meet you!
I am known for "Hakkenden," and even if you don't know me, you know "Hakkenden"! My works have left my grasp and taken a life of its own! ...And yet, now I've become a Servant myself. What oddity! What curiosity! Rider, Kyokutei Bakin! Pleased to make your acquaintance! Perhaps those who know me know solely of The Eight Dog Chronicles! Perhaps those who know me not identically know solely of The Eight Dog Chronicles! My perspicuous novels escaped my hands and gained a life of their own! …Yet, I am the one made a Servant? Outré… Most outré!

Ah! What oddity!
Is this what Ascension of one's Spirit Origin feels like!? With a new outfit, I feel renewed, like I've turned a new leaf! Oyo, yet another outré hap. So the Ascension of a Saint Graph happens in this fashion. I feel more consolidated in this pristine raiment.
| |
Ascension again!? How felicitous!
...By the way, why do I have a set of dog ears and a tail too now? Are the ears to enhance my hearing? Hm. W-well, I guess that makes sense. And the tail is just there because it's cute? Wh-what!? O-outrageous! A successive Ascension? Joyous. By the way, why must I, in the capacity of an elderly man, still bedight these accessories facsimile of a dog's ears and tail? "The ears are to hear better"? R-right, I see the logic in that. "The tail is just because it's cute"? Opprobrious!

| Bond Lvl 1 |
I often use the phrase "svabhāva," which basically means the name reflects the object. In other words, everyone has been given a fate from the heavens. The same goes for your own name, Master. You should reflect upon it one of these days.
To simply describe the Myousenjishou I hourly make mention of: "names and natures do often agree". To rephrase it, it means a person is granted destinies from heaven. Likewise, your name limns your fate, Master. Take the moment to deliberate on its meaning.
| |
| Bond Lvl 2 |
I was pompous, uptight, and difficult... I'm used to hearing those insults. It's not easy to change one's innate temperament... You can't teach an old dog new tricks! Hahaha!
But in all seriousness, I should remind myself not to be too reliant on Master's kindness. I sound categorically toploftical. My punctilious vocabulary is demeritous to casual conversation. I am already used to these barbs spoken behind my back. Mending one's natural disposition is demanding labor! Ha-ha-ha-ha... But I must admonish my faults, lest I'll be presuming on Master's kindliness.
| |
Write, write, write.
This here's my diary, and I've never once missed an entry! It's a custom of the Takizawa family! And since you're like family to me, I don't mind you taking a peek, Master. Initially my entries were a bunch of trivial nonsense, rather than exciting literary entries. I just wrote things like the places I visited, people I met, the food I ate, what I bought, the weather, and my pet bird. But now my entries are mostly about the mischievousness of my Eight Dog Warriors and about you, Master... It can't all be about peaceful days, you know! Hahaha! Rustling goes the pen. Yes, this is a journal. I am documenting day-to-day without falter, as a man of the Takizawa family must. As my Master, you are also family to me, meaning your perusing is no bother. Even if you weren't, what I wrote here is trivial matters, wholly contrary to my hair-raising, heart-throbbing literature. Things such as loci I proceed to, those who I crossed with, minutiae of my meals, purchased goods, weather, or the state of my birds. Nowadays it has been fixedly about the mischief of my Canine Warriors and the occupations of my Master... but I mustn't fixate solely on these dovish occurrences. Hahahahaha!
| |
I'm sure you've already figured this out, but this is Michi's body. She was my son Souhaku's wife, and I even gave her the name Michi when she married into the family. I hate to admit it, but I'm sure she suffered a lot because of me. She became my new set of eyes when I grew old and lost my sight, and her hands held my brush to write. Without her, I would never have finished my "Hakkenden." So I can see why my manifestation happened using her body. Michi might not like it, but from now on we're going to be of two souls in one body as we go on our journey.
Putative to the first glance as it may be, this habitus belongs to Michi. She's is wed to my son Souhaku, and the name Michi is one I styled her with at the ceremony. Michi is one woman I incontestably burdened overmuch. As age took the light of my sight, The Eight Dog Chronicles would have never been completed weren't for her becoming my new eyes and penning hands. For such, I'm agreed with the significance of me manifesting in her physicality. My apologies to Michi but we shall share the litter once more.
| |
| Bond Lvl 5 | 「 |
I abandoned the way of a warrior in the past. But now that I've gained a lord worthy of serving, I believe I have regained my warrior spirit. If you will accept me and my life wholly, which has been full of regret, I will serve you with all my soul.
I once forsook the importance of my samurai family, but not that I finally met a lord worth attending, I believe I finally reacquired my warrior feather. Furthermore, if you will favor me in spite of my life full of regrets, I will put my entire soul to your avail.
| |
Wha...are you going to go out!? Bring the palanquin around! Wait for a palanquin!
Zowie, we egress? You're too noble to go on foot. Wait for a litter.
| |
A lord should simply act firm and proud as lords are expected to be. If that isn't possible...well, it's also polite to turn a blind eye.
My lord must be as a proper lord and exude a tight-laced and august presence. And when that visage is impossible for you... turning a blind eye is oft an act of courtesy.
| |
Master, you are most definitely worthy of my service! Have confidence!
Hm? You're saying Servants can't choose their Master? No, I don't think that's true, actually! Master, you're deserving of Kyokutei Bakin's attendance. Be assured. You say Servants cannot choose their lords? Nay, I vehemently disagree.
| |
Tetsuzou...
I suppose Katsushika Hokusai and I have this inseparable relationship...or rather, maybe there's a deep and evil bond between us! Hmph! That man... If I say right, he goes left, if I say the creature's a tiger, he says it's a dragon, and if I say it's just a light breeze, he cries that a great wave's coming! If you were to collect everything I'm missing and knead it all together, you'd end up with that man. The fact that Hokusai and I were able to publish a complete novel titled "Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki" together was nothing short of a miracle in Edo! And now, we're able to work together again here in Chaldea... Oh man, oh man... Tetsuzou... Katsushika Hokusai and I are a match made in hell. Perhaps the old saying about the wedlock best describes it: The most maladjusted bonds are the tighter and most uncuttable. That man is the left to my right. The dragon to my tiger. The billow to my maelstrom! That man was meticulously built from all the pieces I lack. You may call Strange Tales of the Crescent Moon, the collaborative novel series of Tetsuzou and mine, the greatest miracle in Edo's history. I expected not to consort with him anew here in Chaldea... Agh... Dear me...!
| |
Ei...Oei?
Yeah you, the motormouth. H-h-hold it! I just wanted to tell you I'm already working on an outline for my new work. And don't give me those puppy dog eyes...it's not going to be done overnight. And even though I'm aware I'm in no position to ask this, since I'm using Omichi's help to do so, I'm still going to... Are you satisfied with your current state and position? Are you aware that the name "Katsushika Oui" is a renowned ukiyo-e artist on her own terms? You're okay with it? I see, then everything's fine! ...Hm? What do you mean, you want to be a fairy? Ei. Oei. Yes, I'm talking to you, the garrulous lass. W-w-w-w-wait, wait. Yes, I do have the plot for my next series already in mind. Hold off your starry eyes, I can't get it written overnight. I'm very aware that I'm in no position to cast aspersions, having to borrow Michi's hands again, but with that in mind, I still must ask: Are you satisfied with your choices? Katsushika Oui is more than resolved enough of an ukyou artist... You're fine this way? Then I trust your decisions. Mh? Xiannu?
| |
It's reassuring to know there are fellow writers in Chaldea! Yet, being a literary great is especially troublesome, I hear! Haha!
Ah...Lord Andersen...a writer of fairy tales. Back in my day, my literary teacher, Santou Kyouden, was the same type of writer. Being young and immature, I derided their works as childish, but I now I've come to appreciate those works. Hm, let me give it a try too... Once upon a time, there once was an old man and old woman... It's heartening to see literary compeers here in Chaldea. Howbeit, masterful warriors of the pen are all insufferable bothers. If you pardon the self-deprecation, ahahahaha! O, Andersen-dono, writer of fairy tales? My writing mentors were Santou Kyouden's tales of antiquity. In my immature days, I misprized juvenile literature, but now their rich flavor ingrain into me. Allow me to try my hand... Once upon a time, an elderly couple lived alone in the mountains...
| |
Oh-ho!? Is that Kijyo Momiji!? She's calling herself Kijyo Koyo here!? She's the heroine Chishusei, Chintatsu in my novel "Keisei Suikoden." It was an interesting novel in which one hundred and eight great men were gender flipped and all became women! And now, if you look around Chaldea, there seems to be no shortage of warriors and knights who have met the same fate as those in my story! Hahaha! Seems like nothing's changed even after two hundred years!!!
Oh?! Kijou Momiji? So here she goes by the name Kijou Kouyou. In my chapbook series Keisei Suikoden, she is the hero representing Chen Da, the Complete Star. Keisei Suikoden is an adaptation of Water Margin where I gender-bent all 108 heroes into women. A piece of prose I'm fondly proud of. Conversely, as my eyes travel the rows of Chaldea, I find no shortage of charmer warriors and knights. Wahahaha, 200 springs later, nothing changed.
| |
Omichi: I sincerely respect Oei. She supports Toto-sama and shows great filial piety. She is a far cry from someone like me, who was always corrected three or four times for my mistakes, and all I did was trace my brush as I was told.
I got to be proud of my brushwork, which I learned between housework tasks, and I was elated to call myself Takizawa Kindou... Oh, how embarrassing... But no matter how tough things were, I enjoyed it very much. I was very proud, Father. Michi: I respect Oei from the bottom of my heart. She's an example of filial piety in how she supports her Poppa. She's the complete opposite of me, who could just trace my pen as ordered while correcting mistake after mistake after mistake after mistake. I'm truly ashamed of all the gloat and vanity I felt for the calligraphy I picked only as a house chore. Can you believe I took the pseudonym "Takizawa Kindou", meaning "child of Takizawa (Ba)kin"? What an embarrassment. However, no matter difficult it was, what we did together is your Michi's greatest pride and joy, father.
| |
Omichi: (Sigh) Pretty boys are so good. Pretty boys who dabble in crossdressing...pretty boys who slowly go to the dark side...
(Sigh) So fascinating. Oh! I'm strictly talking about this for literary inspiration, really. But since I've manifested in this world, I would be extremely happy if I could resume writing "that" work Father left unfinished... Michi: AAAAAAAHH! I love me some pretty boys. A pretty boy who enjoys cross-dressing! A pretty boy drenching in the path of evil! Aaaaah! My effete heart is archly taken... Oh! W-what you just heard is merely the plot of a future series. Fiction, you understand? B-but, I'd be very glad if father gives his Michi permission to take this rare opportunity at a second life and resume the writing of this series I couldn't complete in life.
| |
| Dialogue 10 Clear Nanmei Yumihari Hakkenden | |
Chinzei Hachirou...Lord Minamoto-no-Tametomo!
I was astonished to learn you were a puppeteer using the most sophisticated and delicate skills! You are truly a man of great strength and talent! I feel it's the fate of a writer who cannot help but feel a kinship with you, almost like a parent. One of these days, I would like to hear more about your adventures so that even my "Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki" story would pale in comparison! Chinzei Hachirou Minamoto-no-Tametomo-dono. Who could have thought you were an automated puppet of furthermost subtle deft? Flabbergasting! A man forsooth, forsooth more stalwart than rumor says. Notwithstanding, this uncurbable affection akin to blood love must be the karma of a novelist's life... Er, I wish request you a tale of adventure to upstage the Strange Tales of the Crescent Moon.
| |
You may not know this, but my favorite things are birds. I once had over sixty types, totaling over one hundred birds in the past. My canary was the most memorable. I heard that the name canary stems from the Western term for "dog." Heh, this is yet another example of things being true to their names... What a strange fate.
Frankly, nothing pleases my heart more than birds. On one occasion, I was raising hundreds of them at once, counting beyond 60 different species. The most memorable was a canary that grew with me from nonage to senectitude. I hear that in their original outlander language, canary shares its etymology with canine. Hehe. Another example of myousenjishou. Fate binds us in wondrous ways.
| |
| Something you Hate | |
What I dislike? You mean something other than Tetsuzou?
Hmmm...I suppose it would be when things don't go my way. I especially hate when unexpected disaster strikes, like whenever I make typos in my works! And I also dislike those who have the nerve to take pleasure in using those unfortunate accidents to make them into their art subjects...like Testuzou!!! GAH! What do I dislike? Not counting Tetsuzou? Mmm... that must be... when affairs don't go as foreseen. Unexpected woe sorrows me tremendously! Most ill of all are misspellings in my writing! I also disfavor artists with Tetsuzou's disposition to dare enjoy such unpredicted calamity to the point of illustrating them! GAAAH!
| |
| About the Holy Grail | |
The Holy Grail? Argh, now's not the time to ask me that!
Hey! Shinbei, Dousetsu! Quit playing pranks! Keno, Shino! Enough fighting! How long are you going to keep eating, Kobungo? Hm, you're a good dog, Daikaku. Do me a favor and wake Genpachi and Sousuke for me. Oh...? Master's turned all fluffy...? The Holy Grail!? [the canine warriors interrupt him with loud barking] Ey, now is not the time. Halt this mischief at once, Shinbei and Dousetsu. Keno, Shino, are you starting yet another fight? Kobungo has eaten far more than his fill and still has no end in sight. Aye, Daikoku, you good boy who does no wrong, go awake Genpachi and Sousuke. Ah, Master left me to rub their bellies...

| During an Event | |
An event that's sprung up out of nowhere!? Even if that were the case, it's a different story if we can rake in some funds!
A startling carnival? Nothing I have business with! That is unless you say the festivities are a profitable time!

Bakin: Today's the day of your birth, Master!?
Ah, this calls for celebration! Mhm, a celebration! A party should be held and everyone should be invited! And then...would it be possible for you to carry my book around? I've been working on it in secret, and I just recently finished it, hoping there would be an opportunity like this to celebrate. Of course, for you, Master, I can sell it at a twenty percent discount...GAH!!! Omichi: Ahem. Of course I will gladly present it to you. Happy birthday. May you have yet another wonderful year. You say it's your day of nativity, Master? Oh, congratulatable. Mmmm, congratulatable! We must amass the men for a felicitatory ceremony. And would you kindly have the reading of my novels as the first event in it? I have a new series completed in secrecy to be revealed come such auspicious occasion. Of course, as my Master, you get a 20% discount... GAH! [Michi takes over even if he's in 2nd Ascension] Ahem, father obviously meant to say we humbly offer it as a present. Happy birthday. May you have a healthy year.
