Sei Shounagon's father was Kiyohara-no-Motosuke, one of the scholars of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber who helped to compile the kun-doku (the Japanese reading of Chinese characters) version of the "Manyoshu" waka poem anthology.
She was a woman of outstanding intellect whose forward behavior (some would say "unorthodox") made her stand out in the male-dominated society of her lifetime.
She faithfully served Empress Teishi, consort of Emperor Ichijou, until the Empress's death. The many prose writings Sei Shounagon wrote in offering to Empress Teishi were later collected to become "Makura-no-Soushi." (The Pillow Book)
Fan Translation:
The daughter of Kiyohara no Motosuke, one of the "Five Men of the Pear Chamber" accredited with compiling the readings for the oldest collection of Japanese poetry in existence, the Man'yōshū.
A woman who lived in a society revolved around men: however, through her own power and initiative, she was able to show the world her amazing talent.
She stayed close by the side of Empress Teishi, who was the wife of Emperor Ichijō, until Teishi's passing. After the Empress's death, her musings and observations of court life surrounding Teishi were compiled into a book called "The Pillow Book".

その豊富な知識をもって男性達をやり込めるなど、
当時の女性としては型破りであった逸話を数々残す。
かの『紫式部日記』においても、
紫式部が相当に彼女を意識していた事が読み取れる。
中宮定子の女房として仕え始めたのは20代後半の頃。
若き定子はひと回りも歳の離れた少納言を寵愛し、
少納言もまた、美しく聡明な定子の期待に応え続けた。
彼女はそんな宮廷での暮らしを面白おかしく書き綴り、散文の数々は後に随筆集としてまとめられる事となる。
これが日本初のエッセイ、『枕草子』である。

An author and poet of Japan's Heian period, she immersed herself in Chinese classics poetry (which were studied exclusively by males at the time). Many tales tell of her arguing down men with her vast knowledge, making her one of the more unconventional female figures of her time. Even in excerpts from "The Diary of Lady Murasaki," it's clear that Murasaki Shikibu saw Sei Shounagon as a force to be reckoned with.
She served as a lady-in-waiting to Consort Teishi during the latter half of her twenties. The young Teishi was very affectionate to Shounagon, even though Shounagon was significantly older, and Shounagon reciprocated by loyally serving the beautiful, intelligent consort.
While in court, Shounagon recorded her own observations and musings on court life, and these were later gathered into a collection. This is considered Japan's first essay anthology, "The Pillow Book."

An author and poet of the Heian period (794 - 1185) in Japan.
Being an oddity during this period in Japan, Sei Shōnagon was well versed in reading Chinese characters and the world of Chinese poetry.
There are many stories passed down through the ages of her using her vast knowledge to go head to head with the men of the time in debates and intellectual discussions.
For a woman of this time, she was clearly not run-of-the-mill.
From "The Diary of Lady Murasaki Shikibu" we can see how Murasaki Shikibu clearly kept the existence of Sei Shōnagon in her mind.
As a lady of the court she began to serve Teishi in the later part of her 20s.
The young Teishi came to deeply care for Sei Shōnagon and in return she loyally served the beautiful and bright Teishi, without betraying any of her expectations.
She would enthusiastically write about the going ons of the royal court where she lived,
later these writings were compiled into a Zuihitsu book.[1]
This would turn out to be Japan's first collection of essays "The Pillow Book".

猫のような気まぐれで周囲を振り回すが、基本的には楽しい事を最優先する新感覚パリピ系サーヴァント。
「をかし(エモい)」をこよなく愛する、時代が早すぎたキラキラ女子。
歌人の風格をどこに置いてきたのかという変わり様ではあるが、彼女の場合、現代の若者文化との親和性が高すぎた結果なのだろう。
定子サロンにおいて年齢を気にしていたという歴史的事実からも、女子高生の姿で召喚に応じた事には、何ら不自然な点はないのである。
カルデアにおける紫式部との仲は良好(本人談)。

She's always in a good mood...or that's how it seems, though she gets sulky at the drop of a hat. The people around her are sometimes at the mercy of her catlike nature, but she is essentially a party-loving Servant who prioritizes all things fun. Sei was a woman well ahead of her time...a girl who's slayin' it and loves anything she finds charming (emotionally triggering).
Her drastic change of appearance does leave open the question of where her distinguished, courtly air as a poet went, but her transformation probably resulted from her strong affinity for modern youth. As biographical information supports that Shounagon was keenly aware of her age during her time in Teishi's court, her being summoned in the form of a high school girl hardly seems unnatural.
She gets along with Chaldea's Murasaki Shikibu. (Well, she thinks she does.)

As soon as you think she's always running around having a blast in a great mood, you notice that there are times where she suddenly feels down.
Similar to a cat, she can be fickle to her surroundings. However, for the most part she focuses on having fun more than anything else. She's a party girl servant.
Sei Shōnagon was a girl that was ahead of the times and lit up her surroundings while musing about her love for the beauty of things around her.
Though there is the question of where exactly her poet-like appearance has gone to, in her case, due to having such a strong connection with the culture of today's young people, she ended up being summoned in her current appearance.
As there is the historical fact that when she was within Teishi's inner circle she was concerned about her age, her current appearance as a high school girl isn't that unexpected.
She gets along with the Murasaki Shikibu in Chaldea. (According to Sei Shōnagon personally)

Despite being named one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets and Thirty-Six Immortal Poetesses and having her poem selected to be a part of the "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu," Sei Shounagon self-depreciatingly claimed that she had no talent in poetry. This opinion on her part may have originated from her forward-thinking ways not meshing well with the rigid, antiquated structures governing Japanese poetry of her time. Even so, her poems have resonated strongly with audiences, and were at times highly critical of the men of her period.

Though being part of the "Thirty-Six Heian-era Immortals", "Thirty-Six Female Immortals of Poetry", and having appeared within "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu", she continues to tell herself and everyone around her that she finds it difficult to write poetry.
It could be said that there wasn't much compatibility between age-old conventions and her way of life which was too early for her time.
Even still, the verses she composes at times would raise the spirits of people, while scaring away unruly men at others.

Hangu Pass may open with singing birds,
However, the gate of love is not so simple.
This unconquerable Afusaka-no-seki,

彼女は『春曙抄』を過去と未来を繋ぐ象徴の言葉とし、
また、春はあけぼの(春曙)の段を抜き出した(抄)かのような自身の宝具を見事表現した言葉として、
自ら宝具名を『枕草子・春曙抄』へと昇華させている。

A Noble Phantasm that substantiated neither through martial arts nor through the techniques of the Onmyou, but rather through continuous writing. She lets the waves of emotion take her, and the landscape painted within her "Pillow Book" is actualized in a sort of Reality Marble.
To Sei Shounagon, the repainted world becomes a familiar, nostalgic scene which then encroaches into the heart of the target who is incorporated into the bounded field.
Sorrow...nostalgia...poignancy...
The strong emotions that disturb her bubble up from within, allowing her to forget about battle, even if for a second, and the energy and power that possesses her is released, making the intense (and preposterous) attack unavoidable.
As a side note, "Makura-no-Soushi, Shunshoshou" is the annotated edition of "The Pillow Book" written by the poet Kitamura Kigin during the Edo period. That her thoughts have reached across time to strike a chord even with modern audiences is truly a stroke of luck for Sei Shounagon. She uses the "Shunshoshou" as a metaphorical bridge that connects the past to the future, combined with her line of "Dawn is most beautiful in spring..." (shunsho) to beautifully express her sentiments in her Noble Phantasm, ultimately subliming the title "Makura-no-Soushi, Shunshoshou" as her Noble Phantasm's name.

Neither onmyōji abilities nor martial arts. Rather this Noble Phantasm is the end result of her just writing away. Letting herself overflow with emotion and creation, the Noble Phantasm is the materialization of the world she created within "The Pillow Book" brought into reality.
In other words, a Reality Marble.
The world rewritten by her holds this feeling at its core: "The view of something nostalgic that I saw once upon a time." From this, the souls of enemies that become trapped within the Reality Marble will slowly be eaten away at. Sadness, nostalgia, sympathy… The overwhelming burst of emotions makes their hearts fall into chaos if they are to forget about the battle for even a glancing moment. Even if they were to be released from the girl who is in full control of this domain, they would suffer a devastating (ridiculous) attack without even attempting to dodge it.
Furthermore, "The Pillow Book: Annotated" is the title of an annotation of the original "The Pillow Book" brought to life by the writer Kigin Kitamura during the Edo period. Though this may be, her own work filled with her thoughts and feelings overcame the passing of time. Becoming loved by generations to come, this ended up being an unexpected lucky thing for her. The title of the annotation became a symbol connecting the past to the future. As the title for the annotation extracted one of her most important lines "Haru-wa akebono" she manifested her Noble Phantasm as "The Pillow Book: Annotated" since this perfectly expressed it.[4]

『枕草子』を綴り終えた彼女は、潔く宮廷を去った。
恩讐さえ捨て去り、華やかな人生を思い返しながら、
ただひとつの星を胸に抱いて生きて行く――それは
同時に、もうひとつの星が消える事でもあった。
彼女は人理を守るべき守護者たりえなかったのである。
だが、ある事件において行われたイレギュラーな召喚が
『清少納言』にひとつの転機を与える事となる。
信頼できる人々と心を通わせ、様々な経験を経て――
自ら封じていた歌人としての自分と、
新たな可能性を併せ持つ事となった彼女は、
ついに『英霊の座』へと迎え入れられたのだ。
かくして、召喚は成された。

Under normal circumstances, Sei Shounagon would not have been registered into the Throne of Heroes as a Servant.
When she completed writing "The Pillow Book," she gracefully departed court life. Discarding both love and resentment of her previous lifestyle, she continued to live the rest of her life carrying the one hopeful star within her heart as she looked back at her incredible past life. Closing that door also meant that her star's light went out, and she did not have the means of becoming a guardian of humanity.
However, due to an irregular summoning caused by a certain incident, Sei Shounagon was given another chance. Through the many connections she formed with the people she trusted and the many things she experienced, the long-dormant poet within her awoke, creating new possibilities within her that ultimately resulted in her being inscribed upon the Throne of Heroes. And so it became possible to summon her.
Even should they never have experienced those wild times with her, Sei Shounagon surely anticipates the day she can finally reunite with them.
Fan Translation:
Originally, Sei Shōnagon would have been considered an existence that was not recorded within The Throne of Heroes as a Servant.
She who completed "The Pillow Book" left behind her life within the imperial court, leaving without a blemish to her name. Looking back on a fulfilling life where even love and hate was left behind, she lives on holding just a single star tight to her chest. At the same time though, another star vanished. She lacked what it took to become a guardian of humanity.
However, due to a certain incident where an irregular summoning occurred, Sei Shōnagon ended up being given a chance. Through her various experiences and trusting the people whose hearts she connected with, the poet sealed away inside her and the new possibilities that were born have resulted in her current self being accepted by the Throne of Heroes.
And... in the end the summoning was a success.
Even if the Master had yet to experience those wild days with Nagiko, Sei Shōnagon would have surely been looking forward to the time where they would meet again.
