『リグ・ヴェーダ』『マハーバーラタ』などに語られる蛇の魔神、あるいは邪竜。
その名は「障害」を意味し、水を堰き止め、干魃などを引き起こす力を持つとされる。
ヴリトラを打ち倒し、その水を解放するのがインドラ神である。ヴリトラは常にインドラの敵として描かれ、両者の争いは神話上、幾度となく繰り返されているという。
インドラ神の別名ヴリトラハンは「ヴリトラを殺す者」という意味である。

NA Localization:
The serpent demon god or the evil dragon mentioned in a number of Indian texts, such as the "Rigveda" and "Mahabharata." Its name means "obstacle," and it is believed to have the power to obstruct the flow of water to cause droughts. Indra was said to have defeated Vritra to put an end to the droughts it caused. Vritra is consistently depicted as Indra's enemy, and the conflict between these two is often referenced in myth.
Indra's other name, Vritrahan, literally means "slayer of Vritra."
Fan Translation:

厳しい冬のような「水のない（堰き止められている）状況」そのものを体現しているのがヴリトラという概念であり、「それ（干魃や冬などの苦しみ）が破られ、水が解放されて恵みの雨が降るという状況」そのものを体現しているのが対となる雷神インドラなのである。

Vritra, the dragon of confined boundaries. She is a Divine Spirit and dragon who is the very personification of obstruction. She is an obstacle to the whole of the world. As a Servant, all of this is shrunk down to human size upon her manifestation.
She is often described as an evil god who causes droughts, but at times she is also interpreted as a winter giant. The idea is that Vritra is the personification of harsh winters when water is scarce, or dammed up. In opposition to this, Indra, the god of thunder, is the personification of the blessing of rain that relieves the suffering of droughts and winter.

NA Localization:
Vritra being summoned in female form is something of a mystery. Perhaps she's imitating Rambha, a prominent beauty who was sent by Indra as a part of his scheme to entrance Vritra to the point of death, or perhaps she chose to become a beautiful woman to make a statement about never falling for Indra's cowardly schemes.
She transcends notions of gender, and her essential traits and persona remain the same regardless of how she presents in this respect. The Servant Vritra's feminine characteristics are, accordingly, based on those of the period in which she manifests.
Fan Translation:
It is a mystery why she was summoned in the body of a female.
She might either be imitating Rambha, because of the anecdote where she was sent to him and he became a prisoner of her beauty and died according to Indra's scheme, or perhaps she became a beautiful woman to show off her determination to "never fall for Indra's cowardly tricks again".
Fundamentally, Vritra is an existence that transcends gender, and since their true nature won't change regardless of their gender, they merely possess a disposition as a female that would match with their current form as the Servant Vritra.

While being mentioned in numerous legends, Vritra's role has always been the same: she fights the gods. This skill reflects her unchanging position and reason for being.
Indestructible Demon: EX
Even if she is defeated by Indra, Vritra will resurrect after some time, and her battle against the gods will resume. This is a skill which reflects that eternal cycle. It is a perpetual repetition likened to a natural phenomenon. The confrontation between Vritra, who dams up water by bringing about droughts or trapping water in clouds and mountains, and Indra, who unleashes that water with thunderstorms, is not a singular conflict with a definitive ending. It has been repeated since ancient times, and it will probably repeat infinitely into the future. In a way, it is the primordial belief in nature and gods. O Evil, Block All Heavens and the Earth.
A Noble Phantasm that refers to Vritra's other name, "the greatest among the Asuras." She uses an army of demons which are either her kin or her own alter egos, and covers the heavens and earth, exactly as her reason for existence dictates. According to legend, Vritra used her own body to dam water up in the mountains. The mountains can be interpreted as clouds, and so this Noble Phantasm is like an ominous cloud that blankets and then crashes down onto the world.
In addition to being an evil dragon, Vritra is also described as an Asura (demon), and is also called Asurendra (king of the Asuras). In the "Mahabharata," an army of malevolent demigods like Kalakeyas and Rakshasas led by Vritra were described as having tormented Indra and the gods, and so she not only has the authority to dam things up, but also wields control over purely violent armies.

A Noble Phantasm crowned with Vritra's other name: "the greatest among the Asuras".
Using her retainers, or more like, the army of demons who are offshoots of her body itself, - in accordance with her raison d'être - she wraps up the heavens and the land, isolating the targets.
Just like how the "mountains" featured in the legend where "Vritra used their own body to lock up the rivers in the mountains" can be interpreted as the "clouds", her form is akin to a sinister cloud covering the world as she crashes down.
Vritra is not only an evil dragon but is also known as an Asura (a demonic race), possessing the name Asurendra (king of the Asura).
Since in the Mahabharata, there exists a description of Indra and the gods tormented by a large army made up of demons such as Kalakeyas and Rakshasas, it not only possesses the authority to "hold back something", but can also be used by her as an army of pure violence.

ガネーシャも元々は障害神だが、今は信仰の結果、大部分が「障害を除去する福の神」の性質になっている。
ヴリトラはそうではなく、あくまでもストイックに
「障害を発生させる」のがメイン。
そこに甘えはない。慈悲もない。
ただ―――ヒトが、世界がそれを乗り越える様を、成長する姿を見て、自分が我儘に愉しみたいだけである。

Vritra obstructing human necessities like water is obviously distressing. Such actions are truly evil. What's more, she's an evil dragon. Yet, what she does is necessary for the world to continue. Just like water getting released from dams or the breath of a bud popping out from the ground, there are certain things in this world that cannot happen without first overcoming obstacles. She is the epitome of the notion that obstacles are a necessary evil to encourage evolution and growth.
She takes great pleasure in watching humans, and the world itself, grow through the hardships and obstacles she has prepared for them. This is not so much benevolence on her part as it is a...condescending, one-sided act in which she takes great pleasure. This is why she will neither hold back nor hesitate.
She may put up obstacles that appear to be absolutely evil, but she's not doing so from a desire for humanity to die off. Rather, she wants to see a stronger, more resilient world and people take control of the future. Bluntly, she's a top-tier sadist. A little less harshly, she's like a strict trainer as well as audience for the world itself. She believes in human strength, though she sees this from a more evil side of things.
Ganesha was also originally a god of obstruction, but recent faiths have made them a god of blessing who removes obstacles. Vritra, on the other hand, is nothing like that, and she is wholly focused on creating obstacles. She will never be merciful. But one thing: for purely selfish reasons, all she really wants to do is to enjoy watching over humans and the world overcome these obstacles and grow.

It is a wicked and evil thing. Hence why she is an evil dragon.
However, in fact, that was also something necessary for the world.

In truth, what she really governs are the "obstacles beyond which evolution awaits" and "impediments that are a necessary evil for evolution".
What she enjoys the most is watching the growth humans undergo after overcoming the hardships and obstacles that she prepared.
It is by no means due to affection; you can clearly feel the pleasure gained from her one-sided perspective (which is surely that of a god) of looking down on them from far above.
That's why she doesn't go easy on them. She has no restraint.
She prepares obstacles that could even be seen as absolute evil, but it's not like she's wishing for humanity's destruction.
She simply wishes to see a stronger future, a stronger world, a stronger humanity.
In short, she's extremely sadistic towards the world.
To put it another way, she is an overly strict trainer and audience of the world.
It means she believes in the strength of mankind as "someone from the side of evil".
Originally, Ganesha was also a god of obstacles, but now, as a result of faith, for the most part, they possess the disposition of a "god of fortune who removes obstacles".
Vritra is nothing like that; they mainly create obstacles in a thoroughly stoic manner.
She won't go easy on others when it comes to this. She will show no mercy.
However────that is only because she wants to selfishly indulge in watching mankind and the world as they overcome them and their appearance as they grow.
