As he saw the situation turning grimmer, Shogun Iemitsu dispatched his chief vassal, Matsudaira Nobutsuna, to act as supreme commander, but Shigemasa became impatient upon learning that, and attempted an assault on the enemy camp before Nobutsuna arrived, dying tragically in the process.
